When it comes to funeral music there are many choices.
I have a friend who is a choir director and a funeral director’s wife. A singer in her own right, she is often called upon to sing at funerals.
Below are some of the songs she gets as requests.
-In the Garden
-How Great Thou Art
-The Old Rugged Cross
-On Eagles Wings
-You Are the Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler
Below are others she recommends:
-Great is Thy Faithfulness
-God Will Take Care of You
-Be Not Afraid
-What A Friend We Have in Jesus
She loves this song but doesn’t know if it would be considered a funeral song,
-Here I am Lord.
Below are some songs that I like:
--When I Get to Heaven by Tim McGraw
--Finally Home by Mercy Me
--Cry Out to Jesus by Third Day
--If You Knew by Steven Perry
Instead of a traditional funeral for my father, my mom chose to have a memorial service to celebrate his life.
As a pastor my dad loved to sing, especially the old time hymns. Instead of listening to a soloist Mom wanted the whole congregation to belt out these songs with much rejoicing that Dad was in heaven now, hearing the Lord say “Well done thou good and faithful servant.” We stuffed more music in than is customary. But remember a funeral service is for the bereaved.
We could have spent an hour just on singing his favorites, but for his service we “narrowed” our choices down to:
Come, Thou Almighty King
Be Still My Soul
Because He Lives
Blest Be the Tie That Binds
For All the Saints
In my father’s ministry files on bereavement, I found a small booklet printed by the Monmouth IL Presbytery. In it is a list of suggested songs. Some are already listed above. Here are the other suggestions:
Our God, Our Help in Ages Past
-Now Thank We All Our God
-How Firm a Foundation
-he King of Love My Shepherd Is
-he Twenty-Third Psalm
-O Savior, Precious Savior
-Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah
-Fairest Lord Jesus
-The Day of Resurrection
-The Lord’s Prayer
-The Strife is Over
-Hallelujah Chorus – from the Messiah
The songs listed above are just a few of the options available. Funeral music is a personal thing. Choose what is best for your family. There is not a right or wrong song.
Every person is so different.

Readings and scriptures touch one person, while for another it is music that moves them. It is nice to add some of each to a service so that it can be meaningful for all.
